Local Heroes - Edmonton Short Film Festival

The Edmonton Short Film Festival is proud to launch a new arm of the organization called “Local Heroes Film Festival”. Our goal is to get Alberta short films in front of as many people as possible! We are excited to announce this new entity that will take over all our community programming: as of  January. 1, 2023.

Alberta filmmakers will be able to submit a short film (up to 30 minutes) for consideration to the FilmFreeway portal. These short films will be available for curation for programming at numerous Community Screening events for a period of five years. Submitted films may be selected for more than one community screening.

We accept films of any creation date and genre (including web series, trailers, commercials, music videos and more)! All films must be “Alberta” films (written, directed, produced, or other key creative or lead performer must be Albertan). The films do NOT need to be filmed in Alberta (e.g., an Alberta-based director may be at Vancouver Film School when they created their short film). (Note that we will disqualify films deemed to contain extreme violence, language, hatred, pornography or copyrighted material.)

Filmmakers will receive a screening fee each time their film is selected for screening. Community Events include: Deep Freeze Festival, Black History Month, Silver Skate Festival,  Indigenous Month, Pride Month, K-Days, Kaleido Family Arts Festival, Root 107, Downtown Light Up and more.
